In the third revised edition (2026) of the FertiPROTEKT book Fertility Preservation and Endocrine Follow-up Care for Oncological and Non-Oncological Conditions – A Practical Guide, available free of charge, you will find comprehensive information on all aspects of fertility preservation in relation to a wide range of malignant and benign conditions.

As there has been a growing number of enquiries regarding the cryopreservation of sperm, please note the following:

  • Cryopreservation may be carried out by both andrologists and specialists in reproductive medicine.
  • The procedures for counselling and getting the necessary certification are the same as those for oocytes or germ cell tissue.
  • Remuneration under the EBM is processed in the same way as for oocytes or germ cell tissue (using the relevant billing codes).
  • Billing under the EBM has been possible since 1 July 2021.
  • Storage may also be subject to billing, particularly if it is not provided on-site but via an external provider (e.g. Air Liquide).
  • For advice on billing, please contact the BRZ (Federal Association of Reproductive Medicine Centres in Germany).

Further details can be found in the relevant guidelines (see pages 7 and 8), as well as in the section “Reasons for Cryopreservation”:
Guideline on the cryopreservation of oocytes, sperm cells or germ cell tissue, as well as corresponding medical measures in the context of germ cell-damaging therapy.

In accordance with the TSVG (Appointment Service and Care Act, draft dated 1 May 2019), patients being in their reproductive age are entitled to counselling on fertility preservation prior to undergoing gonadotoxic therapy.

The FertiPROTEKT Network brings together centres across German-speaking countries (Germany, Switzerland and Austria) to ensure timely and expert counselling over a wide geographical area. Member centres are committed to offering all available treatment options, either directly or through established collaborations, to enable individualised care.

When referring a patient to a centre, please ensure that documentation is provided outlining the underlying condition, the planned start date of treatment, and details of the intended gonadotoxic therapy, in accordance with legal requirements.

A BRZ document is available for download.
